Higgs & Sons

Regional firm based in the Black Country. Employing approximately 175 staff over two operating offices in Brierley Hill and Kingswinford.

What we did:

A "Green" Committee consisting of a broad spread of staff from both offices meets regularly to discuss initiatives to involve staff in carbon reduction measures. The Managing Partner is a member of the Committee.

Staff wide survey was distributed and received positive suggestions on how we can be "greener".
Waste paper and cardboard is re-cycled through the services of a locally based re-cycling business.

We are educating staff on the efficient use of computer equipment and periodically leave chocolate treats on the desks of those individuals that have turned off desktop equipment.

In February 2010 the firm re-located its Brierley Hill and Stourbridge offices to a new office based at Waterfront Business Park, Brierley Hill. The new building is fitted throughout with PIR lighting. Shower facilities are available for the increasing number of staff cycling to work.

What we learnt:

Staff are embracing the paper re-cycling culture and cleaners have noticed considerable reduction in waste paper being deposited in individual bins.

Occasional chocolate treats has led to an overwhelming number of machines now being turned off at night.

A number of staff are now commuting to work by bicycle/walking given the availability of shower facilities.

Working in conjunction with our appointed air conditioning maintenance company and constantly monitoring systems has enabled us to reduce our electricity consumption by 9% and gas consumption by 19% over the 12 months since moving into the building
